Protecting precious skin from sun damage

Over exposure to the sun can have serious effects on the skin, particularly on young skin. Below are our top tips for keeping little ones safe in the sun.

  • Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight and make sure they wear UV protective clothing and high SPF sunscreens (at least 25+). In line with NHS guidance, babies under 6-months should be kept out of the sun entirely.
  • Avoid intense midday sun. This is a great time to head indoors for some shade.
  • Do not stay too long in the sun, even when using a sunscreen product.
  • Reapply sun cream frequently every 1-2 hours, and always after perspiring, swimming or towelling.
  • Encourage your child to wear a hat to keep their face protected.
  • Give your child regular sips of water to keep them hydrated.

FAQs

Childs Farm after sun lotion coconut

Can Childs Farm after sun be used as a normal moisturiser?

Absolutely, the organic coconut fragrance and nourishing formula in our after sun is loved by many, so people often choose to use our after sun as their daily moisturiser.

What UVA star rating is your sun cream?

Our UVA star rating is 3, which a good level of protection and meets the EU requirements for UVA protection.

The UVA star rating system was developed by Boots, and it is not an EU requirement to have a UVA star rating. The UVA star rating system is just measure of the ratio of UVA protection vs. UVB protection. If a product has a low SPF, it may still have a high level of stars, not because it is providing lots of UVA protection, but because the ratio between the UVA and UVB protection is about the same. It is important to look for a sunscreen that filters both UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum), but particularly with a high SPF to block UVB rays that cause sunburn. Sunscreens with SPF 50 protect against 98% of UVB rays, whereas SPF 15 sunscreens only filters 93% of UVB rays.

Sunscreens play an important role in protecting skin from the sun's harmful rays, and as no sunscreen can provide 100% protection it’s important to make sure this is applied and re-applied regularly as well as following other safe sun behaviours, such as wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade during the hottest parts of the day and checking the UV index.

When should I use and after sun lotion?

An after-sun lotion should be used after prolonged sun or wind exposure to help lock moisture back into the skin.

First, wash skin to remove sun cream, then apply after sun all over body, face and hands.
